  • City of Battle Creek: Fact Sheet

Battle Creek won its name due to an encounter between John Mullet and indians in 1824 along the banks of the Kalamazoo River. The town’s history starts with the government purchasing land for a post office in 1832. General Erza Convis officially surveyed the land in 1835, with Samuel Moore registering the plat in 1836. It was incorporated as a village in 1850 and designated a city in 1859. Dr. John Kellog and the Seventh Day Adventists built a sanatarium in 1866. Thus were the humble beginnings that would lead to the “cereal capital”.
