    Novi is a community of approximately 55,374 residents. The community has great access to three freeways (I-96, I-275 and M5). Novi was first formed as a village in 1832. The village took steps in 1966 to lay the ground work for becoming a city. The special election in May of 1968 had 6,902 residents turn out to cast their votes for the charter commission. The village incorporated as a city in 1969.Novi is the 28th largest city in Michigan. Novi has over 1,000 acres of park land and 10 miles of bike trails and nature walks. Novi has over 3.7 million square feet of retail space with the majority in the three major retail malls (Twelve Oaks, Fountain Walk and Novi Town Center) and centers located near the Novi Road & I-96 Interchange. Novi was part of Grand River, the first major road crossing the state (1840) and has continued to be a hub in the metropolitan Detroit freeway system. The freeway system features the east/west, north/south interchange of M-5, I-696, I96 and I-275.
